Orthodontics
Corrects dental and jaw alignment, improving function, oral health and the aesthetics of your smile
Orthodontics is a dental speciality that studies, prevents and corrects abnormalities in dental development, jaw position and the shape of dental arches. Its goal is to restore both the morphological and functional balance of the mouth and face, improving chewing, speech and facial aesthetics, while achieving harmony in the smile.
Types of orthodontic treatment
Orthodontic treatments are mainly classified as interceptive or corrective, depending on the patient’s age and the type of problem to be treated.
Interceptive treatment
This type of orthodontic treatment is applied during the primary or mixed dentition stage, meaning when baby teeth and permanent teeth coexist. Its purpose is to prevent or reduce major abnormalities in facial growth and tooth positioning. Interceptive orthodontics is often used to correct improper oral habits (such as thumb sucking or mouth breathing) that interfere with normal jaw development. Although it may not always eliminate the need for later orthodontic treatment, it helps make future corrections simpler and more effective.
Corrective treatment
When malocclusion is already established, or interceptive treatment has not been sufficient, corrective orthodontics is used. Its purpose is to align teeth, correct the bite and achieve a functional and aesthetic smile. There are several types of appliances used in corrective orthodontics:
- Functional appliances: act on the muscular and bone structure, promoting structural changes. They are particularly used during growth and mixed dentition stages.
- Removable appliances: also known as ‘plates’, they help expand jaws, correct crossbites or mild crowding, and perform controlled tooth movements.
- Fixed appliances: offer the highest precision, as they allow individual movement of each tooth. They correct rotations, close gaps and achieve perfect alignment.
Invisible orthodontics with Invisalign®
The Invisalign® system represents the most advanced evolution of modern orthodontics. It is a virtually invisible treatment that uses custom-made transparent aligners, designed with 3D digital technology.
The process begins with a digital study and treatment plan that allows patients to visualize the final result even before starting.
The aligners are custom-made to move the teeth gradually and precisely. Each set is worn for one or two weeks before being replaced with the next, progressively achieving the ideal position.
Main advantages include:
- Discretion: transparent aligners are barely noticeable.
- Comfort: they cause no friction or wounds, and discomfort is minimal.
- Removability: they can be taken out for eating, brushing or sports.
- Precision: digital planning ensures accurate, predictable results.
- Hygiene: removable design allows for easy cleaning and optimal oral hygiene.
