Endodontics
Partial or total removal of damaged pulp tissue to preserve the tooth and restore its health
Diet, tooth morphology, poor oral hygiene and certain medications, as well as metabolic diseases, are among the factors that contribute to the development of cavities. The presence of caries is one of the most frequent reasons for irreversible pulp damage and one of the main causes requiring endodontic treatment.
Endodontics, or root canal treatment, involves the partial or total removal of the damaged dental pulp in order to preserve the natural tooth and restore its health, avoiding extraction. If infection, inflammation or necrosis of the pulp is left untreated, it can progress and cause bone loss around the affected tooth.
Endodontics is indicated when the lesion — caused by decay, periodontal disease or trauma — is very deep and there is a risk of oral or general health complications. The solution to avoid tooth loss involves removing the infected or necrotic pulp tissue.
Procedure
- The dentist examines the tooth and determines whether endodontics is the most appropriate treatment for the patient.
- After applying local anaesthesia, the affected nerve is removed from the tooth’s root canals.
- The canals are then carefully cleaned and disinfected to make them as sterile as possible.
- Once clean, the canals are filled and sealed with a biocompatible material that prevents bacterial re-entry.
- Finally, the tooth is restored with a filling or a post-and-core reconstruction, depending on the amount of remaining tooth structure left.
- If necessary, a crown or cap is placed to protect the tooth and prevent fractures.
Benefits of endodontics
- Stops bacteria from spreading to supporting tissues such as ligaments and bone.
- Preserves natural teeth, avoiding extraction.
- Eliminates pain and discomfort caused by pulp infection.
- Provides an effective, safe way to restore a damaged tooth’s function and appearance.
- Helps prevent halitosis and avoids more invasive or costly treatments in the future.
- Contributes to maintaining a natural and functional smile in the long term.
